A Health Instructor Teaches Her Pupils About The Significant Issues Involved In Alcohol Addiction Signs
Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the most under financed private high school in the local community. Although she had been teaching for only three of four years, she had already acquired a reputation as an educator with a teaching methodology that stimulated and motivated the pupils in her class to learn and to think.
For instance, one Tuesday afternoon she addressed the pupils in her classroom and announced the following: "For the next few days we are going to learn about some basic alcoholism signs from a more wind-ranging perspective and we are also going to learn about a number of the most familiar signs of alcoholism from a more specific perspective."
"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will definitely reveal that someone with a drinking problem is an alcoholic, but the more signs that a person displays, the stronger the possibility that she or he is an individual who is addicted to alcohol."
Miss Jackson then told the class that each pupil would be accountable for examining two alcohol dependence signs and then presenting his or her results to the other class members via a seven minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcohol addiction signs that were presented and discussed in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked the students in her classroom to go over the list and rank the top eight alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcoholism. After approximately twenty minutes, Miss Jackson collected the pieces of paper and explained to her students that after she analyzes the numbers, she will discuss her findings the next school day.
Miss Jackson told her students to go over the data on the sheet of paper she passed out and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, issues, or questions. Within a minute or two, just about every student in the classroom raised his or her hand. It was obvious that the students had some issues, concerns, or questions about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism professionals. For example, almost every person in the class had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism professionals, namely, "Do you feel very ill when you refrain from drinking?"
Miss Jackson then explained to the pupils in her class why this answer was the most clear-cut indicator of alcohol addiction. She highlighted the fact that the major difference between alcoholism and alcohol abuse is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol dependency and not with alcohol abuse.
In effect this means that when an alcoholic suddenly stops drinking, she or he will go through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the importance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the individual who is addicted to alcohol, the pupils started to appreciate the primary difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism.
A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating the end of the class. Based on the buzz displayed by the students when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson knew that she had inspired and stimulated the pupils in her class to stop and think about a vital health issue and social problem that exists in our culture.
