Ralph began drinking heavily when he was in the seventh grade. From a positive perspective, even though he drank abusively and hazardously when he was a teenager and a young adult, over the years he has been mostly a moderate drinker.

After he finished his education he eventually got a job at a local copper smelting plant where he applied himself and worked his way up from stock person, to office assistant, to purchasing assistant, to purchasing agent. Unlike his other positions, as the purchasing agent he time after time took existing vendors and potential vendors to lunch and to various sporting events.

Although it was not written in stone, meeting with existing vendors and potential vendors again and again involved circumstances in which alcohol was present. In actual fact, over the past fourteen months, Ralph had started to radically increase his social and his work-related drinking. This has led to a dilemma. More explicitly, the more successful he became as a purchasing agent, the more heavily he began to drink.

In fact, it did not take much time at all before Ralph's abusive and hazardous drinking started to adversely affect the money in his savings account, his work efficiency, his health, his relationships, and his mental health. After many weeks of excessive drinking, Ralph, in reality, started to get nervous about his abusive drinking and wondered if his alcohol-related concerns were alcoholism signs. To make things worse, his almost constant feelings of depression also made him wonder whether he was becoming an alcohol dependent person. In short, Ralph clearly needed to learn more about the facts about alcohol abuse and the signs of alcoholism.

So Ralph used his reasoning skills, called his health care practitioner, and set up an appointment for a complete physical exam. The next week when he saw his health care professional, Ralph unfortunately was told that he was addicted to alcohol. His physician told Ralph that he needed to get alcohol detoxification and alcohol rehabilitation for his alcoholism and that he also needed to get treatment for his depression. In a word, Ralph needed treatment for his alcoholism and depression.

His health care professional recommended to Ralph that he request a 45 day leave of absence from work and get admitted into a quality in-patient alcohol rehabilitation facility where his depression could also be assessed and treated. This is exactly what Ralph did. The good news is that after his treatment for depression and for alcohol addiction, he felt like a new person. In point of fact, now that he was in recovery he almost never got depressed and he now understood how to more efficiently and successfully manage his health, his finances, his job, and his relationships.

To no one's surprise, the biggest test Ralph faced was at the office. To be more specific, he still took potential vendors and his existing vendors to various sporting events and to lunch, but after his alcohol treatment he managed to refrain from drinking while entertaining his clients.

It may be noted that Ralph also discovered that none of his potential vendors or his existing vendors thought any less of him because of his abstinence. To the contrary, he discovered that his existing vendors and potential vendors thought even more highly of him for staying true to his convictions.

After Ralph went through alcohol treatment he found out that if he refrained from drinking, all of the other meaningful parts of his life would be upgraded. At times, it may be noted, Ralph missed drinking, but the better health, relationships, finances, and the better work performance he experienced more than counterbalanced his craving for alcohol.
