While doing your basic dog training try and carry out the lessons away from any outside influences like his toys or play things. Walk with him to a nearby park or paddock where there aren't any other people or animals. First of all get your dog's attention and give him the sit command, then place your hand over his hind quarters and gently push him down into a sitting position, when it is down say sit and make a fuss of him by patting him, then give him a biscuit or what ever treats you have brought along to reward him with.
By regularly repeating this exercise, your dog will sit when he is told, because he understands that by doing what he is told he will get a treat and also because he can see that you are happy with him. Eventually your dog will naturally do what you tell him, and the treats will no longer be necessary.
Newborn puppies are really quiet chaste and need to be loved and taught how to behave. You can teach your dog from any age but young puppies are easier to train as an old dog may just not have the incentive to learn.
