The Negative Cycle Of Excessive Work And Heavy And Hazardous Drinking And The Motivation For Alcohol Therapy
Work was becoming too chaotic for a young police officer named Lonnie. Even though he had only been on the police force for two-and-a-half years, he was already known as a hard worker who rarely refused working overtime. If truth be told, he was now working ten to fifteen hours of overtime each week and, as a result, he felt like he was losing his grip on his personal life. What made the situation more complicated, however, was the fact that Lonnie started going out drinking with a gang of fellow officers after work.
Obviously Lonnie was in a health related and emotional rut and experiencing some negative signs of alcoholism. Where Lonnie really noticed drinking related issues and alcoholism signs, however, was in his marriage and in his family life. His wife wasn't really a nag, but she often begged him to stay at home more with the family rather than going out and spending money while drinking with his fellow officers.
In his heart of hearts, it was apparent to Lonnie that his careless drinking was negatively affecting his health, work, relationship with his family, and his pocketbook. So one Friday morning Lonnie came to a decision to talk to Richard, a trusted old police officer friend that he greatly respected.
Lonnie told Richard how irresponsible drinking was adversely affecting his pocketbook, relationship with his family, work, and his health. Richard told Lonnie that he totally understood because approximately ten years ago, he too became involved with abusive and excessive drinking. In fact, Richard told Lonnie that irresponsible drinking can create so many problems in an individual's life that just about everything of significance can be ruined. And finally, Richard suggested that Lonnie schedule an appointment with an alcohol therapist at the work-affiliated drug and alcohol abuse rehab center.
Since his employee's assistance program was affiliated with this rehab center, it was not only very affordable but also quite convenient to seek rehab about his abusive and excessive drinking. And due to the fact that the staff at the alcohol abuse center was competent, supportive, and non-judgmental, Lonnie would be able to get alcohol rehab that made sense to him and something he could accomplish.
After talking to his therapist about how his drinking was negatively affecting his health, work, relationship with his family, and his pocketbook, Lonnie understood that he was burning the candle at both ends with his crazy work hours and his irresponsible drinking. Once he comprehended that he was getting himself into a rut, after detoxification and with the assistance his counselor, and after ten weeks in therapy, he was finally able to stop drinking and quit working overtime.
The result was that Lonnie viewed life differently now that he was in alcohol recovery and learned about alcoholism facts. Stated briefly, due to his alcohol treatment he not only was more patient when interacting with his wife and his children, but he actually had more money now even though he was working far fewer hours each week, he had more quality time to spend with his family, and he felt better and more healthy. Ironically, now that he stopped drinking, Lonnie and his wife were not only starting to save some money for a new house but he also felt more alert and more energized than anytime since he and his wife got married.
